Warning: Contains big, dragon-sized Game of Thrones spoilers.
It looks like this Season of Game of Thrones could be a good one for fulfilled prophecies.
Just the other day we had a theory about Quaithe’s weird speech to Daenerys from the books and how that might be about to come true, and now we have another one all about the legendary figure of Azor Ahai.
You remember Azor Ahai, right? The Prince (or, as it was stressed earlier this Season, Princess) that was promised. The figure who’s supposed to forge some crazy powerful sword called Lightbringer and conquer the darkness and all that other good stuff.
On Wednesday, Redditor matttwee shared the following explanation of why they think Azor Ahai’s identity may already have been confirmed…
I’m a big fan of this theory.
The links to water and the lion make real sense (they’re just the right kind of subtle), and all the other hints in the script have been pointing to Daenerys as Azor Ahai for awhile now.
It could all just be a big red herring, of course, and someone totally random like Gendry might end up being Azor Ahai — but so far the signs are definitely pointing to the Mother of Dragons.
What’s the third part of the prophecy going to involve?
The big question, of course, is how the final part — the whole thrusting-his-sword-into-his-wife’s-heart bit — will play out.
If it’s anything like the water and the lion sections it won’t be literal (obviously Dany doesn’t have a wife, anyway, so it couldn’t be), but it does raise a disturbing question: will Daenerys end up killing someone close to her (either by accident or on purpose) in order to fulfill the prophecy?
This is Game of Thrones we’re talking about, so the answer is almost certainly a big, horrible yes.
