Many wearers have a strict code for their jackets: some are never to be washed, others are never taken off unless completely necessary. The jackets manifest as an extension of the wearer’s personality, not unlike a tattoo. They provide insight: Every patch and every jacket has a story.
“Wearing a jacket is a paradox. It means being part of a tribe of people yet at the same time showing your individual tastes in music and culture.” says Paul, who made his first battle jacket about five years ago. “At first it seemed like a very conformist approach to music, but the more I immersed myself in the underground side of the music, the more I felt the need to spread the word of the great bands I listened to.”
Beth is a die hard fan of Iron Maiden who has seen them dozens of times since she first heard the band in 2006. Her jacket is covered in Maiden patches, among other bands. “I started listening to them when I was going through a very bad time, and they really helped me a lot.”
